24,351 clicks, views and searches for online databases which are part of the Lois Hole Digital Library by our students from January to October 2014.
The increase is because of the 'GO FISH' Information Literacy program. The use is encouraged by creating pathfinders, workshops, embedding training modules, group, and one on one instruction. Learn to use library databases - your way by email, social media, in the computer lab via our private navigator mobile library service.
September was the Library Card Sign-up and orientation month. The peak months for the use of online databases were March and September recording 3,485 and 10,482 hits. Students were required to use online databases for a variety of assignments such as essays, term papers and annotated bibliographies.
What type of databases do we have access to via Lois Hole Digital Library?
We have access to more than 20 databases and the details are as follows.
Academic Search Complete and Academic Search Elite
Coverage in animal science, anthropology, archaeology, area studies, astronomy, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering, ethnic & multicultural studies, food science & technology, general science, geography, geology, history, law, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, music, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, psychology, religion & theology, veterinary science, women's studies and zoology.
ATLA Religion Database
ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials combines the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion with ATLA's online collection of major religion and theology journals. The ATLA Religion Database includes more than 488,000 article citations from more than 1,500 journals (506 currently indexed), more than 215,000 essay citations from over 15,700 multi-author works, and more than 446,000 book review citations. This database begins in 1949 although indexing for some journal titles extends back into the nineteenth century. This database is produced by the American Theological Library Association.
Alt-Health Watch
This alternative health database provides full text for 180 publications in the collection, including full text for many peer-reviewed journals. Alt HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine dating back to 1990.
Bibliography of Native North Americans
Bibliography of Native North Americans (BNNA) is a bibliographic database covering all aspects of native North American culture, history, and life. This resource covers a wide range of topics including archaeology, multicultural relations, gaming, governance, legend, and literacy. BNNA contains more than 98,000 citations for books, essays, journal articles, and government documents of the United States and Canada. Dates of coverage for included content range from the sixteenth century to the present.

This is the world's definitive scholarly business database, providing the ultimate collection of bibliographic and full text content. Business Source Complete contains far more active, peer-reviewed, business related journals than any other database currently available. As part of the comprehensive coverage offered by this database, indexing and abstracts for the most important scholarly business journals back to 1886 are included. In addition to the searchable cited references provided for more than 1,200 journals.
Business Source Elite
This business database provides full text for nearly 1,100 business publications, including full text for nearly 500 peer-reviewed business publications. The rich collection of titles in Business Source Elite provides information dating back to 1985. This database is updated on a daily basis via EBSCOhost.
Canadian Newsstand
Canadian Newsstand offers unparalleled access to the full text of Canadian newspapers.
Canadian Reference Centre
Canadian Reference Centre combines Canadian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books to create the largest collection of regional full text content available to Canadian libraries. This database includes leading Canadian periodicals and international (U.S. and U.K) periodicals in full text; full text reference books; full text biographies and an Image Collection. This database is updated on a daily basis.
CBCA Complete
Canadian Business & Current Affairs (CBCA) Complete is the nation's largest and most comprehensive bibliographic full-text reference and current events database.
CINAHL Plus with Full Text
CINAHL Plus with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 560 journals indexed in CINAHL. Of those, nearly 400 have cover-to-cover indexing in CINAHL. With more than 600,000 full-text articles dating back to 1937, CINAHL Plus with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of nursing and allied health literature.

Use this database to find articles from a comprehensive list of Canadian and international journals, magazines, selected sections of the Globe and Mail, Canadian biographies, and other reference content from Thomson Gale, all with a Canadian focus.

Health Source: Consumer Edition features searchable full text for nearly 150 journals. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Designed specifically for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 1,700 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes nearly 500 full text reference books, 84,774 biographies, 100,554 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 202,164 photos, maps and flags. SocINDEX with Full Text
SocINDEX with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. The database features more than 1,660,000 records with subject headings from a 19,300 term sociological thesaurus designed by subject experts and expert lexicographers. SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 344 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 129 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for more than 700 books and monographs, and full text for 6,800 conference papers.

Academic Search is the most widely used database. AHFS Consumer Medication Information was accessed by our students during summer months of July and August showing that the use of online database is penetrating g in our community.

September 2014: Conducted ROAR service Research Online with Authority and Relevance for Indigenous Studies 1910 (Focusing in Authors education and exposing students to the career benefits of taking the course. Some authors were working as curriculum developers so our students have a choice in future to pursue this)
October 2, 2014: One on one instruction for annotated bibliography and author credentials
October 3, 2014: Looked at the papers written by students using MLA style and suggested to a self-check sheet before submitting the paper such as font size, font type, spell check, margins, etc.
November 3, 2014: Proposed Cree studies 1102 shared reading by thesis being projected on a smart board. Posted a starter question – Cree Identity and Language and community focused learning by answering the question, 'What can Maskwacis Cultural College do to have more Cree speakers in our community?' Initially we were planning to have a webmap however the roundtable dialogue, debate was an interesting discussion.
November 4, 2014: Economics 1501 assignment about price ceiling and price floor using online databases.
November 6, 2014: Did a demonstration of online databases for the academic upgrading class.
November 12, 2014: Did a one-on-one training with Wilda Listener for the community healing course and we searched for articles on hope and emailed an article. She demonstrated the online databases to her class.
November 13, 2014: Wilda found that many did not know that they could access online databases from their home.
November 21, 2014: Did a research skills session using online databases for Koren Lightning's organization class. Students had to search for journal articles demonstrating good management practices. The search findings were submitted to the instructor for marking.
November 24, 2014: ILAAP Tool used for five courses to measure the effectiveness of library instruction.
